A few minutes ago, was officially appointed Rod Beckstrom as the new CEO of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the regulator of Internet domain names worldwide, happened after more than 10 years at the helm, Paul Twomey.
As commented by Peter Dengate Thrush, chairman of the board of ICANN, "Rod Beckstrom has exactly the strong personal and technique background, which requires ICANN, now that we about to enter in unpreceding period of growth and change in the Internet .
This referring to the liberalisacion of domain names, to be established from the first quarter of 2010, despite still having many edges in tecnical issues and related to competition, and trademark rights, to resolve.
He added:
"In addition to his experience in cyber security, he has been a successful CEO of a global company, and work in NGOs and voluntary work and author of bestsellers. It is an extreme understatement to say we're excited."
The new CEO add a few comments on the situation in Iran, and the importance of Internet as a tool of free expression:
"The importance of the Internet as a source of flow of information was highlighted at this time by events in Iran," said Beckstrom. "This demonstrates the power of human expression through a free and open Internet."
